About the role

Are you interested in working with young people in your local community? Would you like to support young people to become active health citizens by helping to deliver an engaging, fun and informative youth programme?

Youth Team Volunteers (18+) teach young people, of all different backgrounds, vital and life-changing first aid skills. We have two programmes – our 5 to 10-year-olds are called Badgers and our 10 to 17-year-olds are called Cadets.

You'll help them build up their confidence, self-discipline and, teamwork skills, and have some fun along the way. We're looking for Youth Helpers and Youth Leaders. You’ll start off as a Youth Helper and, if you fancy it, you'll get the opportunity to become a Youth Leader, with some additional training and experience.

What will I be doing?

Trained Youth Leaders work directly with young people in St John Ambulance Badger Setts and Cadet Units. By organising a mixed weekly programme, this role will support the learning and development of young people into the next generation of health citizens. Youth Leaders also supervise and support other adult volunteers in their team.

As a Youth Helper, you will be responsible for:  

  • Creating a safe, inclusive, and open environment, where young people can learn life skills including First Aid 
  • Supporting with the delivery of games, activities and sessions 
  • Coordinating with your team to make sure young people are safe and supervised 
  • Empowering and encouraging inclusion and participation of all the young people 
  • Supporting the Unit Manager with administration, collecting resources, paperwork, etc.

Being a Youth Leader comes with a bit more responsibility - you'd be running the unit and take the lead on supporting our incredible young people. 

 Youth Leaders are also responsible for: 

  • Leading, organising and supporting the preparation and delivery of programme in a fun way 
  • Ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all young people and adults in the unit 
  • Managing the parent/guardian rota 
  • Understanding and applying all relevant policies, procedures, youth programme content and role requirements in your unit

What to expect

  • Leading, organising and supporting the preparation and delivery of the unit programme in a fun and exciting way to ensure the engagement and satisfaction of attending young people.
  • Collaborating with your unit youth team to create an inclusive, safe, and open environment in which young people are empowered to develop and learn life skills, including First Aid.
  • Coordinating with colleagues in your youth team to maintain supervision of young people and ensure there are sufficient adult volunteers to meet supervision ratio requirements.
  • Ensuring appropriate adjustments for inclusion and participation of all young people and adults are made within your unit.
  • Supporting the Unit Manager as required and sharing responsibility for the safeguarding, duty of care, health, and wellbeing of young people within your unit.
  • Create a culture of respect and awareness of diversity to ensure all young people and adults are treated equally and fairly as part of the unit.

How often will I be volunteering?

Cadet and Badger sessions usually run for 1½-2 hours, during term time.

To start with, we're looking for you to join the unit at least once a month (but we love it when volunteers can join the young people every week).

What you’ll bring to the role

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and personal motivation to work as part of a team and an infectious sense of enthusiasm and commitment.
  • Passion for seeing young people succeed and a willingness to engage and support young people to learn life skills within St John.
  • Able to communicate effectively with young people.
  • Willing to partake in the training so support the variety of activities involved in delivering a St John youth programme.
  • Experience of working with young people (aged 5-18) or as part of a youth organisation (for Youth Leaders).
