  • There are frequent stock shortages / issues sourcing spare pens
  • Pharmacies often provide pens with only 6-9 months expiry
  • Pens are often locked away with restricted access
  • Depending on size of a site, pens could be vital minutes away from someone experiencing anaphylaxis

Training staff

  • Businesses may only train designated first aiders (who might not be available when anaphylaxis occurs)

  • Costs: c.£15-20 per head for a one-off training session

Sale: In order to sell adrenaline pens, which are a prescription only medicine (POM), in our Anaphylaxis Kitt service, we applied for and were granted a Wholesaler Dealers License (WDA) license by the Medicines Health and Regulations Agency (MHRA).

Supply: In the Human Medicines Regulations Amendment Part 2 under the ‘Exemption from the restriction on supply of prescription only medicines’, section 6 states how prescription only medicines can be sold or supplied to registered schools, and persons operation occupational health schemes.

Use: Regulation 238 states that adrenaline pens can be administered on people without a prescription, for the purpose of saving life in an emergency.

In summary, A registered school, or a qualifying business with an occupational health scheme can purchase spare adrenaline pens for their premises. These can and should be administered to anyone who needs them, to treat the symptoms of anaphylaxis. In the words of Professor Adam Fox - ‘adrenaline is a very safe drug’ and ‘there’s no reason to delay in giving it’.
